There's a certain kind of artist who doesn't just make music — they turn survival into sound. Biishop Qurry is one of them.
From the B.O. to Navassa to the South Side
Biishop Qurry was born in the B.O., but Navassa, NC is where he came up — where he went to school and where his roots run deepest. When trouble found him early ("jumping off the porch," as he puts it), his path led him to the south side of Wilmington, NC. That blend of hometowns shaped him: his father's family is from Jervay, his mother's from Navassa, and the streets of both towns are stitched into who he is as an artist.
Music wasn't something Biishop Qurry discovered — it was something he was born into. His father worked as a talent agent at New World Night Club back in the early '90s, putting him close to the business side of music before he could even understand it. But it was the smaller moments that left the biggest mark: riding in the car with his pops, music blasting, his father rapping or singing along to every word, burning CDs for friends who wanted a copy. That was Biishop Qurry's first classroom.
Turning Pain Into Product
Ask Biishop Qurry who his biggest influence is, and the answer isn't a chart-topping rapper or a legendary producer — it's himself. His story includes a criminal history that pulled him away from being productive, away from being great. But even behind those walls, music never left him. He started making diss records on people he didn't like during a hard stretch of his life, and it became his outlet — his way of getting something off his chest that words alone couldn't carry.
People told him he was good. He heard it. But hearing it and believing it enough to build something out of it are two different things. "Plant your seeds and watch them grow. Keep being consistent no matter where you're placed in your local community's eyes. The consistency will win every time — and that's my reasoning for saying keep growing your plant. You're the plant."
